Floppy Action
Breaking down the popular action in basketball known as "Floppy"
FLOPPY ACTION
Floppy is a baseline screening action used to free up shooters or scorers for catch-and-shoot, curl, flare, or DHO opportunities. It typically starts with the offensive player(s) under the basket, then using screens on either side of the lane to pop out. If using the action for a single player, one side will have double screeners and the other side a single screener. If using the action for two players, they both will run off single side pins.
BASIC STRUCTURE
Initial Alignment:
1 (PG) with the ball at the top
2 (primary shooter) and 3 (secondary) under the rim (usually only 1 runs the play)
4 and 5 (bigs) set staggered screens — one on each block or a double on one side
Options:
Shooter chooses which side to come off (single or double staggered)
Bigs react based on the shooter’s decision
Option to reject both screens and go backdoor or curl
Common Terminology:
“Single-Double” – One screen on one side, two on the other
“Get Open” – Shooter reads the defense and chooses the screen
“Reject Floppy” – Shooter fakes and goes opposite of the expected side
A. Catch & Shoot
Ideal for shooters
B. Curl or Fade Read
If the defender trails tight, curl into mid-range
If defender goes over the top of the screen, flare to corner so the big can “change” the angle of the screen and rescreen
C. Pin-Down Into DHO
Shooter curls and immediately takes a dribble handoff from the passer
D. Post Seal by Screener
After setting the screen, the big can seal and call for post entry
E. Hit the Screener
If two guys go out to guard the shooter, the shooter can hit the screener immediately for a dump down
